The Syriac Knanaya Christians are the descendants of Syriac Christians of Jewish origin , Knai Thoma, a rich merchant, and 72 familiesfrom Edessa (or modern Urfa ) to the Malabar Coast ( Kerala ) of India and established their colony., during the 4th Century ( AD 345 ). In the group there were also priests, deacons and their bishop, Uraha Mor Ouseph (Bishop Joseph of Uraha/Urfa). Knai Thoma and his people were welcomed by Cheraman Perumal, the Emperor of Kerala, and were given permission to settle down in Kodungalloor. They built a town in Kodungalloor with a church and 72 houses. The Knanaya Christians have a traditions and culture of their own, which bind them together wherever they are - in India , America , Europe , Middle East etc...
